Moldova is situated in the South-Eastern part of Europe between Romania and Ukraine. From north to south, the country is 350 km long and from west to east is 150 km wide, which allows, low from the capital, Chisinau, to visit three countries – Moldova, Romania and Ukraine. By visiting the unrecognized state of Transnistria with the capital, the city of Tiraspol, you will get acquainted with the Soviet past which was kept here.
Moldova is a small, essen mostly agrarian country, with a population of 3,5 million inhabitants and is among the top 10 producing countries of wines of the world.
The connoisseurs of wines, as well as those the unfamiliar, can taste the collections of wines of the cellars of the locality of Milestii Mici, cellars who are recorded in the Guinness book of words records with a length of 120 km of underground galleries; basements of the city of Cricova, who were visited by numerous persons, such as: Iurie Gagarin, the first cosmonaut of the world, the Russian president V. Putin, Angela Merkel, chancellor of Germany, etc. At Cricova is the former collection of wine of Göring, a major dignitary of Nazi Germany.
Wines of the village of Romanesti were sent to the table of the czars of Russia, the Romanoffs, and are also exported all over the world. These wines taste like the wines of Bordeaux, France. You can see for yourselves by visiting these places. Wines of Purcari, appreciated for their high quality, go on the table of the queen of England.
The amateurs of dry classic red wines such as – Cabernet, Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Traminer, Sauvignon; Feteasca and Rara Neagra (renamed Moldavian wines) can be savored to the company Chateau Vartelly (Castle Vartelly) which is near a very old town of Moldova.

Cricova is a national treasure and the most well known winery in Moldova. At the deepest point, the tunnels are 100 m below the ground. The tunnels were created when limestone blocks were excavated to help build Chisinau. It was converted into an underground wine cellar in the 1950s. The natural limestone helps to maintain a constant temperature of 12-14 C (54-57 F) and humidity of 97-98%, creating optimal conditions for storing wine. Half of the tunnels in the cellar are used for this purpose. The tunnels are named after the wines kept there.
Cricova has a huge collection of more than 1 million vintage wines, including French, Italian, and Spanish wines, and samples from many other countries. The oldest wine is from 1902, Jewish Easter Wine, and the oldest bottle of liqueur, Yan Bekher Liqueur, is from the same year.
At the heart of the cellar are lavishly decorated themed banquet halls and tasting rooms, all recently renovated. Here guests can enjoy fine white, rosé, and red wines, old collection wines, and sparkling wines, the pride of the winery. Cricova offers daily tours and tastings for visitors. Tour packages range from basic tastings with simple snacks to large tastings with a full meal and souvenir. However, the winery recently opened a new restaurant, Orasul Subterean that accepts walk-in guests.
Milestii Mici is the largest underground wine cellar in Moldova. It has more than 200 km of limestone tunnels, 55 km of which are used for storing wine. The tunnels’ depth varies from 30 to 85 m below ground.
The tunnels were created by excavating limestone blocks to build Chisinau. It was converted into an underground wine cellar in 1969. The natural limestone helps to maintain a constant temperature of 12-14 C (54-57 F) and humidity of 97-98%, creating optimal conditions for storing wine. Most of the wine is stored in huge oak casks – made with Crimean or Krasnodar oak – that vary in size from 600 to 2,000 dal. The largest are big enough to hold a small car. The tunnels are named after the wines kept there.
The tasting halls are luxuriously decorated, accented by water, stone, and wood features. The walls are made from natural sea shell rock, skillfully illuminated. The cellar also has mosaic ponds with goldfish, fine sculptures, and beautiful stained-glass windows. Here guests can taste a range of wines. The winery produces dry, semi-dry, and sweet wines. Depending upon the tour package purchase, the tasting may include younger red and white wines, old collection wines, and sparkling wines. Tour packages range from basic tastings with simple snacks to large tastings with a full meal and souvenir.
Chateau Vartely is located in the center of Moldova near the town of Orhei only 45 minutes from Chisinau. It is one of Moldova’s newest wineries. Vartely winery produces a range of fine wines and there are several tasting packages to choose. Guided tours of the winery can also be arranged.
The winery has several tasting rooms, one where guests can try Vartely wines alongside similarly priced wines from renowned wine regions of the world. The facilities are impeccable. The winery boasts an on-site restaurant with capacity for more than 250 people, serving national and French cuisine. Vartely also has a small but excellent hotel complex with 8 luxurious rooms and 4 VIP apartments with views of Orhei town. The rooms are decorated in elegant, pastel colors, creating a harmonious and romantic atmosphere. The winery also has a small on-site wine and gift shop.
Purcari is the oldest wine estate in Moldova, established in 1827. The winery has a long and proud history producing some of Moldova’s most iconic wines i.e. Negru de Purcari and Rosu de Purcari. It is located in southeastern Moldova in Purcari village in the Stefan Voda district, one of Moldova’s most prestigious wine producing regions.
The winery produces a range of fine wines. Guided tours of the winery and guided wine tastings are on offer. Wine tastings occur in the main dining room of the fully renovated chateau-style building. The winery restaurant serves national and French dishes, each item carefully chosen by its meticulous owner. Purcari also has 8 large and well kept hotel rooms. It has a small on-site wine and gift shop.
Branesti is located in the forest near Orhei Vechi in Branesti village. It has 50 km of underground cellars, reaching to depths of 60 m beneath the surface. There are two tasting halls at Branesti, one of which is located underground. The halls are decorated with wood and metal that reproduce images related to vine cultivation and winemaking. Here you’ll be able to enjoy dry white and red “collection” wines and sparkling wines. Lunch service is available as an option when you visit for a guided tour and tasting.
Chateau Cojusna is located in the heart of Moldova only 15km from Chisinau. The winery produces wine and brandy. It has beautiful cellars that keep collections of the most famous wines produced by the winery. Grape varieties are Sauvignon blanc, Muscat, Pinot noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The winery offers guided tours and wine tastings. Wine tastings take place in a themed Middle Ages Hall, which takes visitors back in time. The entry fee starts at approximately 10 EUR and goes up depending upon the tour package purchased and the number of people in the group. Lunch service is available as an option when you visit for a guided tour and tasting.
