Description
Hancu Monastery
Founded in 1678, it is located in Nisporeni district, about 45 km from Chisinau. The monastery began as a monastic hermitage of the hermit Mihail Hîncu, at the request of his daughter, who then became a nun, taking the name of Paraschiva. In the 18th century the hermitage was abandoned due to the invasion of the Tatars.
Frumoasa Monastery
Frumoasa Monastery of Nuns is 14 km from Calarasi. The history of this monastery begins in 1804, when Efrem Iurco from the village of Oliscani, Orhei county, who was a widower and wanted to become a monk, came to this place.
Răciula Monastery
The monastery is located near the village of the same name, 11 km from the town of Calarasi. It was founded in 1797 by two brothers Andrei and Ioan Roșca, priests from the village of Pașcani. The monastery is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and is a monastery of nuns, with about 90 nuns.
Hârjăuca Monastery
The monastery is located about 25 km from the town of Hârucauca. Calarasi, on the banks of the Hârjauca stream and near the village of the same name. It was founded in 1740 and is dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord.
Hârbovăț Monastery
The monastery is located on the valley of the Ichel river, about 10 km from the town of Hârbovăt. Calarasi. It was founded in 1730 by the nobleman Constantin Carpuz. Inside the monastery there is a stone church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built by the monk Stefan Lupu (later monk Serapion). The other church is dedicated to the Holy Spirit and was built in 1870, during the time of the abbots Ieronim and Natanail. Here is preserved the famous miracle-working icon of Our Lady, "Gârbovița", given in 1790 by the wife of the Russian colonel Nicolae Albaduev, who was killed by a horse at the monastery gate.
Vărzărești Monastery
The oldest prayer house in the area between Nistru and Prut, founded by the nobleman Stan Vărzari, Vărzărești Monastery is documented on 25 April 1420 in a document issued by Alexander Voevod (April 1399 - January 1432), Lord of Moldavia, in view of the gifts made to Pan Vena the vornic, for his right and faithful service. Although it is mentioned only at this date, the Vărzărești Monastery was founded much earlier than the date of the signing of this act, as it was quite popular at that time, since it served as a landmark for the drawing of the land boundaries.
Condrita Monastery
The monastery was founded in 1783 and is located on the outskirts of the village of Condrița, Strașeni district, 25 km from Chisinau, on the Catargul river. In 1946 a part of the monastery buildings was given to the Agricultural Vocational School. In 1947 the whole monastery came into possession of the school. In 1960 it was transformed into a summer camp. In the place of the old monastery cemetery a platform was built, a large part of the tombs was destroyed. The large summer church of St. Nicholas was turned into a club, and the old winter church of the Assumption - into a warehouse. The monks were transferred to the monasteries of Suruceni and Căpriana. In 1993 the monastery was returned to the faithful.
Suruceni Monastery
It was founded in 1785 and returned to the faithful in 1991. It is located 25 km from Chisinau, on the outskirts of the village of Suruceni, Ialoveni. The history of the monastery dates back to 1785, when the monk Iosif built a small hermitage. He also built a wooden church here in 1794 with the help of the local nobleman Casian Suruceanu, who donated part of his land to the monastery. Between 1825 and 1832 a stone church was built in place of the wooden church, dedicated to St. George. The church of this monastery is the only one in Moldova lined with pink Armenian tufa, which gives it a special elegance and originality.
